Starting a blog requires quite a bit of decision-making.
After sifting through several blog services, all of which tout how easy and simple it is to start your own blog, I realized that the first decision was to pick where I’d want to park this new venture of mine. As you can see, I chose WordPress. They advertise that you can “Get your own WordPress.com account in seconds.” This is true. I entered a username and picked a password, provided an e-mail address, and ta-dah! I was on my way. That’s when quick and easy takes a nose-dive.
See, after entering your demographic info, you are asked to pick a title and URL for your newly-created blog. This is a permanent choice (the URL anyway). I figured it has to be catchy, easy to remember, creative, somewhat descriptive of me and what I choose to accomplish here, and not something that already exists.
Problem.
I can do one or two of the above. BUT ask me to come up with a name that meets all of the above and I got stumped. Seriously, I have no idea how long it took to come up with something. I mean, I could have done “stevesblog.wordpress.com”, but how boring would that be? And I could have done “the-place-for-Steve-to-dump-random-thoughts-and-observations-and-updates-on-what’s-going-on-in-his-own-little-corner-of-the-universe.wordpress.com, but I don’t think that meets the “easily memorable” litmus test.
So eventually I made a list of traits that described me, and then made a list of what I hoped to accomplish by blogging and tried to pair them up. After some time, I realized that “Musings of a Magyar” seemed to meet the various requirements. It’s descriptive of me, short enough to remember, somewhat catchy, and a heckuva lot more creative than “Steve’s blog.”
What’s a Magyar you say? Glad you asked. Magyar is the Hungarian word for “Hungarian.” And in case you didn’t know, I’m mostly Hungarian. So, it all fits. And thus, a blog is born.
